What superheroes can teach us about Impostor Syndrome

Do you ever feel like your achievements are mostly due to luck? That there are vastly more qualified people out there who are doing a much better job than you are? That your employment history is a series of oversights by recruiters who OBVIOUSLY weren't paying close enough attention when they took you on? That your talents are impressive enough, but not really when compared to the talents of those around you? In other words, do you ever feel like a Hawkeye in a room full of Thors and Captain Marvels?

If your answer is yes, you are not alone: up to 70% of us have felt like an impostor at some point in our careers. We become crippled by self-doubt and feel like we will never belong or be good enough.

The more successful we become, the worse it gets; dealing with our impostor has nothing to do with our actual skills or competence.

In this talk, with humour and compassion, we will...

  • Look at a brief history and a definition of the concept of Impostor Syndrome

  • Build our confidence levels both in terms of feeling and appearing more confident.

  • Understand the different types of impostor and how they can trip us up at work and in life

  • Work through some solutions to take away and practice so we can enjoy our achievements and inspire others
